Isolation of commensal bacteria from umbilical cord blood of healthy neonates born by cesarean section

In this study, samples of umbilical cord blood were collected from 20 healthy neonates born by cesarean section. From the 20 blood samples, 9 (45%) resulted in bacterial growth after an enrichment step in anaerobic BHI broth, a universal bacterial growth medium. ​​PCR results showed that 8 Cm-resistant colonies contained the genetic label specific to the transformed E. faecium JLM3 cells. More recently, a study focused on the influence of the composition of the oral microbiota of 300 women in their pregnancy outcome revealed that some bacteria, such as Actinomyces naselundii, were linked to lower birth weight and earlier delivery whereas others, such as lactobacilli, were associated with a slightly higher birth weight and delivery date.
